Description of Bosch 53518 3-1/4-Inch 18-Volt Ni-Cad Cordless Hand-Held PlanerIncludes 18 Volt Cordless Planer - 53518-RT, 18 Volt Cordless 2.4 Ah Battery - BAT026, 9.6-24 Volt 1-Hour Charger - BC004, Stop Bracket - 2 608 005 015, Chip Bag - 2 609 170 013, Carrying Bag - 2 610 914 300 If Bosch has their way, a day will soon come when a full-featured powerful cordless option will be available for any tool a worker needs. This planer is one such example. It's a full-sized and feature-packed cordless version of Bosch's popular corded planer. It offers a 3-1/4-inch planing width and is depth adjustable to 1/16 of an inch. The 18-volt motor spins the blades at 13,000 rpm. The planer uses a ratcheting depth knob for quick and simple adjustments, and in a system unique to Bosch planers, chip ejection can go to the left or the right as needed. It has an electronically balanced single-blade design to reduce drag for a longer run time and smooth finish. While this planer does offer plenty of power, cut capacity, and a full feature set, the battery makes it a bit heavier than its corded cousin (which can actually add to the tool's stability in use) and the handle position is more forward and on top of the tool to accommodate the battery at the back. This model comes with one battery, a one-hour charger, a chip and dust collection bag, and a carrying bag. --Brian Trinen
Tools and Hardware Reviews of Bosch 53518 3-1/4-Inch 18-Volt Ni-Cad Cordless Hand-Held PlanerCustomer Review: after 5 years of professional use...still excellent Summary: 5 Stars
this and the jigsaw (both battery and not) are the best of the line in practicality. I use them both constantly.
The blades seem to last for ever and easily switched. And batteries are now on sale cheap here at Amazon (about 40 bucks which is unheard of for 18 volt nicad boschs)
only criticisms are wishes: more rabbiting clearence on one side or the other...but does get down about 3/16's or so. And better chip clearance. Deeper cuts always clog up on both cabled and cordless models. As on the belt sanders, Bosch seems to have a hard time engineering good dust and chip expulsion w/o vacuum (and even w/ vacuum assistance). Also the reversible direction of chip expulsion is a great feature Left or right...but hte plastic turning tube/selector eventually will break as it's always stiff to turn. All the pro's seem to have their's broken as my finally did after 4 yrs.
Otherwise still going strong! No one else seems to offer this sort of product and Bosch is the best in jigsaws and hand planers (except for the minor problems mentioned above.)
