Tools and Hardware Reviews of Bosch 4100-09 10-Inch Worksite Table Saw with Gravity-Rise StandCustomer Review: Great saw for serious DIY'er Summary: 5 Stars
I used to be a framer. I now work in engineering. I decided to build myself a house, a good 10 years removed from my trade as a framer.
Part of that was to aquire a new set of tools. I got the basics back:
Worm Drive saw
Sliding compound miter saw
Regular bag hand tools
couple of laser levels and a nice Stabila bubble level
table saw
Air nailer(s)
I did a lot of research on the table saw and went to the big box stores to get a feel for a few of them. This saw, hands down, beat everything I checked out including the old clunker I had kicking around my garage.
Fence: easy to use, and accurate. Maybe not furniture guy accurate, but I was able to shave down LVL rim board by 1/32" at a time, and acutally hold the paper thin shaving in my hand.
Included blade: meh. Great for an 'included' blade, but not the nicest one I've used.
Assembly: It's a Bosch. Read the directions, and take your time. I set aside time for assembly instead of trying to put it together and cut wood before coffee time.
Anti-kickback B.S.: So, I've been guilty of taking safety gear apart in an effort to actually use a tool. The anti kick pawls, plastic finger guards and riving knife are still on my saw. They work really well, out of the box, so They stay on, and I use them. 10 out of 10 on those. I had to take them off to cut down an assembled plywood box. A couple of spring loaded clips and it was off. The riving knife slides out of the way and locks below the table. smart, easy to use and efficient.
Power: No banging or circuit breaker-ing. Nice quiet soft start, and gets to speed faster than I can really shove wood into it. Quiet enough to leave on between multiple cuts (like angled bird blocks) without getting to obnoxious. It is, however, a table saw. They're a bit loud.
Ripping: awesome, smooth and handles knotty Hem-Fir, LVL framing material, finish plywood, CDX and Pressure treated plywood with ease.
cross cutting: great, but I use the compound chop saw for most of this.
Blade angle adjustment: I would prefer to see some sort of pressure system here. Once you loosen the release knob, the saw assembly is basically free swinging. makes it hard to adjust fine parameters, and you can easily whack the back of your hand trying to hold the assembly and loosen the keeper at the same time.
Blade depth adjustment: fast and easy. I'd feel better if it had a positive lock for depth. I never saw it move, but I also didn't run dado's or anything that was depth critical.
Gravity Rise Stand: Easy to roll even on it's small tires. I don't like that it won't go up stairs due to wheel size. I also don't like that you set one side, and then the stand rolls toward you to open up. It means you have to make sure you've got room to open up the stand before you start to open it up, and you pace backward. I find that awkward in tight spaces. That being said, it's a snap to fold it up and shove it in a corner when your done. I'm not a fan of the pneumatic tires, but I don't dis-like them.
Push Stick: weird, but completely usable.
Extend-o-table: Works just fine, fence is still straight.
The end result is a great portable table saw. I ripped a bunch of shelves for a friend. Something like a dozen 3/4" plywood pieces 14"x16". Saw cut clean, never bogged down and the fence remained absolutely straight. ALL the shelves were identical in ripped width. I saw no movement of the fence or wobble of the blade over the repetitive cuts. I felt comfortable trimming the shelves by 1/16"; usually I'd leave that to sanding. This saw cuts clean and straight enough to take a half a kerf off without a worry. Same went for 80 framing roof blocks cut from 2x10 with a bevel on them. No problem. Cuts were accurate and clean.
Buy the (not included) left side extension table. Totally worth it.
I don't recommend ripping a full sheet of plywood on this, but that being said, I managed to do it, by myself, with 1/2" ply. ONLY with the extra feed table though.
All the con's don't even come close to outweighing the pro's of this saw. Very happy.
I've owned it for about 6 months now, so I can say with some confidence I'm still very happy and don't regret it for a minute.
