Tools and Hardware Reviews of Bosch 1640VS Finecut 3.5 Amp Power HandsawCustomer Review: For small detail trim work, this saw is your best friend Summary: 5 Stars
I have had mine for over four years, and while it is not used as much as my table saw or miter saw, when I need to make a right-on-the-money cut, on a small moulding or a trim piece, this is the tool I rely on. I purchased a kit, with the saw motor, fence, and clamps.
As a trim carpenter/cabinetmaker, I have found that small moulding pieces can and will, shatter, when cut with a miter saw, even with a premium blade. When I need absolute accuracy on the small stuff, this saw delivers the cuts I need, when used with the fence, without the risk of shattering the work.
I used this saw, with excellent results, on a bathroom face-lift job, where the client wanted an existing vanity (and its drawer fronts) refaced. The drawer fronts required 3/4" X 3/4" corner moulding for framing them. After several were shattered on a miter saw, I used the Fine-Cut. I got clean, accurate miters every cut. I was pleased with the results (I am a demanding prefectionist), and more important, the client was impressed with the results.
Keep in mind, in my experience, that this tool can be a handfull when used freehand. As others have said, it is not just another reciprocating saw. With the fence, I have found it an absolute pleasure to use.
My only, and very minor, complaint is the supplied hold-down clamps supplied with my kit are occaisionally difficult to hook into the fence body. Some persistance always gets them hooked in place. In spite of this minor issue, the cuts this saw makes are 5-star, every time.
Buy one, and learn to use it for its intended purpose. I would recommend this tool to anyone who needs to make precise cuts on smaller, and expensive, mouldings. I think you will be as pleased with the results as I am.
